Adhesions are fibrous bands formed after an abdominal operation and they bind loops of intestines to the abdominal wall causing kinks in the intestine causing chronic abdominal pain, sometimes unbearable. These occur commonly after lower abdominal surgery like an abdominal hysterectomy, caesarean section, ovarian surgery etc. These adhesions are difficult to diagnose by any investigation like an ultrasound of abdomen and CT scan. In patients who had undergone a hysterectomy or an appendicectomy in the past and continue to have chronic abdominal pain will require a diagnostic laparoscopy and release of these adhesions (bands) for pain relief. A majority of patients become pain-free after this operation which is done as a day care procedure.
