Gall stone disease is very prevalent worldwide. Sedentary habits, westernized diet and obesity are greatly responsible for increasing gall stone prevalence in India. This problem is seen quite often immediately after childbirth in young women. Obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, malfunctioning of thyroid can also pre-dispose to gall stone formation. Unlike stones in the kidney, gall bladder stones do not pass out into the intestine safely and hence should be taken seriously and treated. These stones cause a whole lot of problems, sometimes life-threatening and hence should be tackled as soon as they are diagnosed. Laparoscopic gall bladder removal is the commonest mode of treating gall stones all over the world. If operated upon by trained surgeons in the best of facilities (like our day care center) patients can be discharged and sent home in less than 6 hours after surgery.
